Oil resistant sole work shoes and leather biker jackets. Now if that conjured up images of dark clubs and Industrial music this is the week for you. i found a group i was a huge fan of back in the early 90s and just had to share. The Band is Die Warzau and i was very excited to find this remix of an older song. You can find out info on them at diewarzau.org and pulseblack.com. Now i needed to find a song to go with this and was happy to find a lot of good industrial out there these days. It made me go break out the Click Click, Nitzer Ebb and Front 242 discs that are gathering dust. The 2nd band is Firewerk, and as i promised here is the 2nd url they list for the band. Ok, i got this recorded early today and am finally getting it posted. This week i’m going with a bit of punk. Now i think punk is one of the better genres of music for MP3's. It's just something got lost moving from vinyl to CDs, it’s hard to explain if your not nor have been a punk fan but it just needs the clicks and pops from vinyl. So with the lower quality of MP3 it adds to it, i think anyway. So this weeks bands are The Pub Crawlers and The ConfederRats. And lifes hecticnesses (wa? its a great word.) continues. i can tell i'm too busy when i don't get my podcasts listened to. Just so you know i tend to have 15 + hours a week of them, but with drive times and computer crunch times i can or have been able to get through all of them most weeks. Well, as of tonight i'm a full week behind. i just got through the pods for the week of valentines day. Now that puts me in the tough spot of deciding what ones get skipped. if your a pod listener you know how tough this decision can be. well, all this is just my long winded way of saying i haven't had time to post the last few weeks but i think it will get better soon, or at least i hope. So for those of you who have enjoyed the lack of posting from me it shan't last. i'm trying to record a music post for tomorrow night and i am about done writing a review of a on-line calender program. Well, it was a very hectic week. This is the 1st chance i have had to do much of anything and i decided to spend it here. i'm guessing your a lot like me and you spend your free time trying to improve your verbal skills so you will be more popular at parties. i found a very useful site that gives you finely crafted sentences that will be sure to make you the center of attention at any gathering. Just spin a few of these out and watch everyone in ear shot drop there jaws in interest and admiration.
And remember, the oily Hugger covers you with computer chips with happy squatty midgets and nasty forks. Laters, g

Newest Distraction

This post i'm going to type my take on an online word processing program. The program is called Writely and can be found at Generic Link! . Now with what little i use word processors, a lot of the extras in most word processor software just gets in the way. i do some writing but it mostly consists of ... File Open New Document ... start typing. i have figured out Boarders and Headings, Line Space, Tables and such in the past but i use them so rarely that each time is like my 2nd. Basicly other then the spell check button i don't do much else. So, you ask, what makes me think im qualified to give my opinion on a word processor program? well im not, but ill give it anyway in case any of you are like me and just want to write without hassles. You may also wonder "Why on line? why not just use a normal program on your computer?" Cause its new and keen and different and...im a nerd who likes to try new things. Then i use my time figuring out how its useful later.

How this is useful to me:

Its lets you upload a document from your present processor program and keep it up on line so you can access it from work or a friends.
You can email or post to a blog right from the program. (and yes i wrote this post using it)
You can set up to share the creation and editing of a document so my plan to write a book with two other friends can happen this way.

You can save your documents from Writely to your desk top and convert it to some standard file types like Word, OpenOffice, RTF and HTML. also looks like you can get a PDF format but it might be with a pay version of Writely. Insert pictures, Tables and Links. You can even set Tags for your documents (now i don't know what the program does with those tags and after i post this it might be clear. but even if it doesn't do anything, its smart to add a button for Tags cause between putting the word Tag and Web2.0 on your product you're sure to have every techy trying to get your product)

Other ways it's useful, just not to me:

You can set up to share Writely with group so you can do things like a sign up list for your club of choice or meeting notes for the fantasy football draft.
And i'm sure an endless amount of other things i'd best leave to your imaginations and expertnesses.

my over all take on this is good. i haven't had any odd glitches and its been easy to set up and use. The spell check works well and as i have said that's very important for me. i'll most likely add a 2nd post after this is up to say how the post to Blog function worked. i'm guessing if it goes smooth i'll be writing a lot more posts this way. it really looks like it's more then your average home user would need, And maybe enough for the office. So if you're a more demanding word processor user i would love to hear your take on this. Laters all, g

Web-O-Fun. 01/15/06

This weeks goofy on-line toy is Protopage. This equates to a personal on-line bookmark site. It uses Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript And XML) to give you a very personalizable (i know that isn't a word, but it should be) space. It lets you change the background and color scheme for the boxes. You can add sticky notes as well, so you could set up reminders for yourself or notes for someone you share this with. I wasn't sure how useful this would be for me, mostly i was trying to see a site that used Ajax, and ended up liking it. I worked on it at night on my desk top setting up links to websites i use and for information sites i read. The next day at work i used it to go to a new site i found but couldn't remember the url for. I also just got a laptop and i haven't even bothered setting up much in the way of bookmarks on it. So all and all its been useful and fun. Nice extra and seeing how its free and if you want to see the fun of Ajax just sign up for a Protopage account and play.

Far be it from me to talk ill of a free market place but i just need to vent about craftsmanship. You would think (or as i understand it) that in a free market quality and price would balance out. Then why am i paying a lot for cheep crap? my kids opened up many toys today so when i tell you that two of the items where poorly made its not really a high percentage. Now as far as i am concerned it is high. I don't remember having this problem even five years ago. Last year we had two items that we needed to return as well. i can also remember several pieces of “put together your self” bookshelf/ furniture missing screw, pegs, dowels and boards. my two month old mp3 players earphone jack is already cutting out if i'm not careful. Now of you might think an mp3 player is a disposable item but, i'm not in a position to consider $200 a throw away amount. Toys breaking with normal use. I still have stuff from when i was a kid that is in better shape then a lot of my three year old sons toys. i would really like to hear from others if they have noticed this as well or am i just a magnet for this? g.

i don’t want to talk on intelligent design(ID) and evolution battles too much but if you haven’t heard about one of the funnier happenings after then Kansas board of education decided to start teaching ID in science class, i just have to add this Wired article. i think in an earlier post i gave links to some info on ID and the Kansas case you can read there that they had to change the definition of science to include what is defined by most as magic and supernatural. Well, being a better reader than writer ill let you read the article. Here’s some links to Noodle info.

This isn’t a bad list but im guessing that people from different sides of the open source debate might have a few subtracts or adds for this.

i personally think the most exciting thing happening now is the bookmark/opml sharing services like del.icio.us and loomia. These are already helping me fine tune searches for new sources of information. Basically (and all i really know is loomia for my podcasts so ill stick with that for my example) you generate a list from your RSS feeds that you subscribe too. These are grouped in an .OPML file. You input that file in to loomia. Now it looks for all the ones you have and compares it to the others members and can find other people you have a large percentage of your podcasts with. Now you can get either a list of Recommendations based on...well if you tell them you really like the Diggnation podcast it looks at all the other people that like it and shows you other things they like. it also compares Tags so if you like a lot of music shows it puts more weight in music shows in your Recommendations. You can also just look around at other customers OPML lists or do searches for Tags or types. i don’t want to talk on and on more then i have. i know there are more service out there that function this way and would love to hear your take on them if you use them. Well, we leaped in the 90s in my office this week by getting high-speed internet set-up. Till now we just had...well ill just say the words Dial-up and AOL and you insert the expletive you feel most appropriate. Now i could make light of the company or the history involved in the need for high-speed (They promised all the customers that they could download their information from our web site but we couldn’t upload them with out one of us taking them home to do it) but i won’t. im above that. i really have had no time to read anything this week so ill just add the 1st thing that made me laugh and maybe this and call it a...mid-after-evening or something. g

This is just getting out of hand. Now the MPA (Music Publishers Ass.) is going after sites that publish song scores and lyrics. i just wish there was a faster way to make the major music companies fall under there own weight and drown in the pool of business. With sites like Podsafe music and Podcasting going on it looks to be starting something that could really change the music industry. You can find groups that are now just giving their music away for free download (here’s one). i have now stopped buying any music from a lot of the big names. i have found enough good music to fill up my available time. my weakness would be the old groups i like, putting out new music. Really i can’t wait to see where all this ends up. g

i lied, ill end with this. If you haven’t been keeping up with Kansas they reworded there definition of science to included the supernatural so they could start teaching intelligent design. i don’t see this as a good thing for any side of this rather extensive and eruptive debate. im guessing some groups are getting behind this just to stop the teaching of evolution not because they agree with this theory
